A group of detainees involved in the protest action at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre (NIDC) in Darwin yesterday were transferred to Curtin Immigration Detention Centre today.
As a result of property damage arising from the weekend’s protest, accommodation options at NIDC have been reduced.
The transfer was undertaken as a prudent detainee management measure.
Such transfers between facilities are conducted as required and are an operational response expected of a department with robust processes in place for such contingencies.
The detainees who were transferred were all adult male Afghans who were involved in yesterday’s protest action.
Curtin Immigration Detention Centre has capacity to accommodate them as all detention facilities are designed to be used flexibly. Immigration detention accommodation can be reconfigured when necessary.
Bringing the NIDC back to full operational capacity that is both safe and secure is also a top priority.
The NIDC remained calm overnight and detainees who were housed at the NT Police watch-house were also compliant.
